Joe Poe, “It movies has the power to cross generations, cross language boundaries, and provoke us to deal with issues in our culture and personal belief systems.”  Movies have been around as long ago as the 1800s. Movies are made and watched all over the world. They are used for many reasons such as for entertainment and also to inform people on things they do not know. I will be talking about films and movies through the five themes of geography and the evolution of films and movies.     Is there a difference between movies and films? The answer is, not really. Film is the material movies are made of, ar at least what they were made of. With the use of more technology, movies are not made of film very much these days. Movies today are generally made with digital projectors. Now those two words mean about the same thing. Film is more commonly used in the movie production. What I mean by that is, it is commonly used by movie directors,  producers, etc. Although now they mean the same thing, before the 90s the word film was more commonly used. Therefore when I am talking about time before the 90s, I will be using the word film. The first film that was ever made is nothing like the ones that are made nowadays.     The first film ever made was in the 1800s. A lot of people in this time were trying to mix photos together and make a motion picture. Although it is not certain, the first film ever was, The Horse in Motion by Eadweard Muybridge. According to wildfilmhistory.org, “The Horse in Motion is a series of stills featuring a galloping racehorse and was the first animal ever to be shown in a moving image format.”  Muybridge had 12 cameras set up on Stanford’s track. This film was not only the first film, but it also answered a question that was unknown in that time. This question was, “is a horse ever airborne when galloping”. Through these photos it was shown that a horse is indeed airborne when galloping. This film started the evolution of the motion picture industry and the evolution of films.     The earliest films that were ever made were: silent, under 1 minute long, and in black white. In the 1890s films became several minutes long, and this is also the time where special effects were introduced. In 1910, films were used as a way to share news. This is also when actors started to receive screen credit. In the 1930s, the first colored films were made. Although the complete transfer from B to color took awhile. During the 1930s-1960s both color and B films were made, since the technology for making colored films were expensive. There was a great increase of the liking of martial arts films, during the 1970s. In the s1990s, animated films made for family audiences, regained popularity. Although animated films started all the way in 1906.     Most people believe that animated films started when, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” was made, but that is not true. Snow White was made in 1937, but animated films started in 1906. In 1906 the first animated film was made by J. Stuart Blackton. The film was called, “Humorous Phases of Funny Faces” , it was made by taking photos of someone drawing on  chalkboard. At first it showed the artist’s hand, but then the hand disappeared and it seemed to be be drawing by itself. “Humorous Phases of Funny Faces”, uses stop animation . There are five types of animation: cel animation, 2D animation, 3D animation, motion graphics, and stop motion. Cel animation is when an artist draws thousands of pictures onto a paper and then has to get it photographed. The process of making cel animations is probably the longest out of the five types of animations. The next type of animation is, 2D animation. 2D animation is similar to traditional animation and is one of the easiest animations. The next animation is 3D animation, .inurture.co.in describes 3D animation as, “the process of generating three-dimensional moving images in a digital environment”. 3D animation is harder than 2D animation and takes more time. The next type of animation is motion graphics. Motion graphics is used for designing stuff such as text or logos, such as the opening of film titles. The last type of animation is stop animation.top animation is similar to traditional animation, it makes things appear as if they are moving.Stop animatron is often made with puppet-based animation and claymation. Some of the movies that use stop animation are: “Coraline,” “ParaNorman,”  and “Kubo and the Two Strings.”  Those are the five main different types of animation, now lets go over the production of movies.     There are five stages of movie production: development, pre-production , production, post-production, and distribution. The first stage is development, when you get an idea and develop it into oa script. Financing is also done during this time. The next stage of producing a movie is Pre-production, this is where all steps, preparations, and arrangements for making the film are carefully made and done. This includes: hiring a cast, confirming financing and insurance of needed, special effects, visual effects, sometimes a storyboard, the locations the filming will take place, costume designs, the general start date of shooting the movie, and any other important arrangements that need to happen. After pre-production is completed, the next stage, production, is started. Production is when the footage for the movie is recorded and shot. The next stage is when the movie is finalized, this stage is called post-production. During this stage everything is edited, such as: editing the recorded film, adding music, the sound of dialogue, and the sound effects. Then all these things are combined to make a movie. The last and final stage is distribution. This is when the movie is marketed, distributed, and screened at a cinema, and released to home video. According to Wikipedia.org, “Film distributors usually release a film with a launch party, a red-carpet premiere, press releases, interviews with the press, press preview screenings, and film festival screenings.”
