Abstract

 

Introduction

Pippalimula (root of Piper
longum Linn.) is one of the vital herbs of Ayurveda included in Panchakola,
Shadushana etc. and attributed dipaniya (stomachic), pachaniya (digestive)
properties. It is one of the highly traded species of pharmaceutical
industries. To meet the increasing demand has resulted in a decline in their
quality. There is now a need to develop a systematic approach for the
authentication of herbal plants and to develop well-designed methodologies for
their standardization. The present paper deals with the macroscopic and
microscopic evaluation of the root of Piper
longum Linn.of male and female plants along with its micrometric techniques.
Pharmacognostic study of Pippalimula male and female (root of Piper longum Linn.)  has been carried out as per standard reference
procedures. Micrometric techniques would be of immense value in botanical
identification and authentication of plant drug and may help us in preventing
its adulteration.

 

Aim and Objective

To evaluate male and female Pippalimula (Piper longum Linn. root) macroscopically and microscopically along with
its micrometric techniques and to find out the dissimilarities and similarities
between the root of male and female plants.

 

Material And Methods

Collection of plant
material from MGACH & RC, Salod,Wardha and authentication of plant was done
at IPGT&RA, Jamnagar and organoleptic, microscopic study was conducted.

 

Observation and Result

In present study, the
T.S.of Pippalimula of male plant shows flower shaped arrangement of 5-6 strips
of vascular bundle located at stellar region and female plants shows fan shaped
arrangement of vascular bundle upto centre without forming any pith.

 

 

Conclusion

Male and female plant of
Pippalimula can be identified on the basis of flower shaped arrangement and fan
shaped arrangement of vascular bundle and this can be utilized for
identification of both the varieties of Pippalimula.
